Background of the Study

Hearing loss is one of the most common disabilities affecting children worldwide. It can have significant long-term effects on language development, social interactions, and educational achievement if not identified and addressed early (Ogunyemi et al., 2023). Early detection of hearing loss is crucial for timely intervention, which can improve outcomes for affected children (Gunay et al., 2024). In many rural settings, such as in Zamfara State, access to specialized healthcare and diagnostic services for hearing loss may be limited, thus making the role of primary healthcare providers, particularly nurses, essential in identifying signs of hearing impairments early.

Nurses, especially those working in pediatric care, play a critical role in the early detection of hearing loss through screening programs and observation of developmental milestones (Alhaji et al., 2023). They are often the first point of contact for families seeking healthcare and are well-positioned to identify early signs of hearing impairments. However, in resource-constrained settings like Zamfara, there may be gaps in nurses’ knowledge about screening tools and early intervention protocols for hearing loss. This study seeks to explore the impact of nurses’ knowledge on the early detection of hearing loss in children and its potential influence on the timely referral and intervention in healthcare facilities in Zamfara State.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the importance of early detection in preventing the developmental consequences of hearing loss, many children in Zamfara State may not be diagnosed in a timely manner. Nurses, due to their proximity to patients and families, are crucial in detecting early signs of hearing impairment. However, limited knowledge or inadequate training in hearing loss identification among nurses may delay early interventions and referrals. There is a need to assess nurses' current level of knowledge and its impact on early detection and management of hearing loss in children.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the level of nurses’ knowledge about early detection of hearing loss in children in Zamfara State healthcare facilities.
  2. To assess the impact of nurses' knowledge on the early detection and referral of children with hearing impairments.
  3. To identify factors that hinder the effective detection of hearing loss among children in Zamfara State.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of nurses’ knowledge about early detection of hearing loss in children in Zamfara State healthcare facilities?
  2. How does nurses' knowledge of hearing loss affect early detection and referral rates in Zamfara State?
  3. What barriers do nurses face in detecting hearing loss in children in Zamfara State healthcare facilities?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses with higher levels of knowledge about early hearing loss detection are more likely to identify children with hearing impairments early.
  2. There is a significant relationship between nurses' knowledge of early hearing loss detection and the number of children referred for further hearing evaluation.
  3. Limited training and resources hinder nurses’ ability to detect hearing loss in children at early stages in Zamfara State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nurses working in pediatric wards and primary healthcare facilities in Zamfara State. It will assess their knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding early hearing loss detection. Limitations of the study may include variability in the training and educational resources available to nurses, and potential biases in self-reported knowledge.

Definitions of Terms

  • Early Detection of Hearing Loss: The identification of hearing impairments in children before they reach an age where developmental delays become evident.
  • Nurses' Knowledge: The understanding and familiarity that nurses have with the signs, symptoms, and diagnostic tools for hearing loss.
  • Hearing Loss: A condition in which a person experiences a reduction in the ability to hear sounds, which can be congenital or acquired.
