Hearing loss is one of the most common disabilities affecting children worldwide. It can have significant long-term effects on language development, social interactions, and educational achievement if not identified and addressed early (Ogunyemi et al., 2023). Early detection of hearing loss is crucial for timely intervention, which can improve outcomes for affected children (Gunay et al., 2024). In many rural settings, such as in Zamfara State, access to specialized healthcare and diagnostic services for hearing loss may be limited, thus making the role of primary healthcare providers, particularly nurses, essential in identifying signs of hearing impairments early.
Nurses, especially those working in pediatric care, play a critical role in the early detection of hearing loss through screening programs and observation of developmental milestones (Alhaji et al., 2023). They are often the first point of contact for families seeking healthcare and are well-positioned to identify early signs of hearing impairments. However, in resource-constrained settings like Zamfara, there may be gaps in nurses’ knowledge about screening tools and early intervention protocols for hearing loss. This study seeks to explore the impact of nurses’ knowledge on the early detection of hearing loss in children and its potential influence on the timely referral and intervention in healthcare facilities in Zamfara State.
Despite the importance of early detection in preventing the developmental consequences of hearing loss, many children in Zamfara State may not be diagnosed in a timely manner. Nurses, due to their proximity to patients and families, are crucial in detecting early signs of hearing impairment. However, limited knowledge or inadequate training in hearing loss identification among nurses may delay early interventions and referrals. There is a need to assess nurses' current level of knowledge and its impact on early detection and management of hearing loss in children.
This study will focus on nurses working in pediatric wards and primary healthcare facilities in Zamfara State. It will assess their knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding early hearing loss detection. Limitations of the study may include variability in the training and educational resources available to nurses, and potential biases in self-reported knowledge.
